Tom Bozzuto ’68, LHD’18, Barbara Bozzuto, former chairman of the Hobart and William Smith College Board of Trustees, recently announced his commitment to innovative science teaching, learning and research at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A $1 million bequest was donated to support the effort. Endowments funded by this gift will be used to maintain continued upgrades to the equipment and facilities of HWS’s new Integrative Science Center.

Citing the Finger Lakes’ legacy of hands-on study, research, and training for medical and doctoral students, Bozzuto said science is “an important part of what makes Hobart and William Smith such a special place.” It states that there is.

Bozzuto, who joined the board in 1999 and served as chair from 2016 to 2020, played a leading role in supporting previous HWS capital campaigns.

If this latest gift comes to fruition, the Bozzuto family will establish a legacy of excellence in HWS’s most innovative academic programs: entrepreneurship, leadership, and now science. In 2017, Bozuto, his wife Barbara, and children Toby and Lexi donated $4 million to the Bozuto Entrepreneurial Center and the Bozuto Family First Generation Endowed Scholarship. Bozzuto was a major donor in the renovation of the HWS boathouse, named after his father, Charles Bozzuto. He also participated in the Executive in Residence program, and the Bozzuto Group has provided internship and job opportunities to dozens of HWS students. He was recognized by his colleagues with the 2008 Alumni Award, an award given in appreciation and praise for his years of work. To celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary, Barbara established the Thomas S. Bozzuto ’68 Endowed Scholarship Fund at HWS.
Bozzuto majored in English at Hobart, was a Theta Delta Chi brother and druid, played soccer, was a member of the Hobart Student Association and Little Theater, and worked at Saga. He served as class president his sophomore and junior years and student body president his senior year. He served as a combat correspondent for the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, and then earned a master’s degree in urban studies from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School.
During his more than 50-year career in real estate, Mr. Bozzuto oversaw and was responsible for the construction of more than 60,000 homes and apartments, earning a national reputation for his leadership and vision in the industry. In 1988, Bozzuto founded the Bozzuto Group of Companies and served as CEO for 28 years. The company currently manages more than 120,000 apartment units and also provides a range of real estate services, including apartment development, construction, acquisition and home construction. He currently serves as the company’s chairman.
A recipient of the Freddie Mac Builder of the Year Award, Bozzuto also received Environmental Builder of the Year from the Maryland Capital Building Industry Association (MNCBIA) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Metropolitan Building Industry Association. A legislative appointee to the Millennial Housing Commission, Mr. Bozzuto served several terms as a gubernatorial appointee to the Maryland Housing Commission and served as chairman of the board of directors for the National Multifamily Housing Council, which represents apartment industry leaders from across the country. . In 2013, the Urban Land Institute’s Baltimore District Council presented Bozzuto with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management named Bozzuto its 2018 Business Leader of the Year.
