“My neck hurts” – Stiff neck and shoulder pain are often mentioned because they are some of the most difficult to treat joint problems. Around 40% of people in the UK experience neck pain at some point in their lives, and 10-20% suffer from neck pain at least once a year.

A common cause is prolonged phone or computer use at work or home. Many of us have poor posture, so developing better habits can be difficult, but stretching can help relieve neck pain and reset your body into better shape.

“Pilates is all about coordination and body awareness,” says Amy Victoria Long, a London-based celebrity trainer and Pilates instructor. “This strengthens the muscles that support your spine, encouraging an upright posture and reducing the forward head position typical of high-tech necks,” she explains.

This exercise also “focuses on core engagement, which improves overall posture and reduces strain on the neck.”

“By practicing Pilates regularly, you can strengthen your muscles, increase your flexibility, and improve your postural habits. All of these things can help reduce the discomfort and problems associated with high-tech necks. It helps,” she added.

You don’t have to be the most bendy person in the world to reap the benefits of Pilates, which loosens and strengthens your back and neck. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a Pilates pro, here are 11 moves to help relieve stiff shoulders.
