4. Abortion is an important part of sexual and reproductive health
Access to safe abortion care is a vital, life-saving part of sexual and reproductive health care, safely supporting patients who do not want to become pregnant. In the settings where MSF works, safe abortion care is an effective intervention to prevent maternal deaths and suffering.
MSF sexual and reproductive health services
Providing sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion care and post-abortion care, has been part of our health programming for many years. In 2023, MSF teams provided 54,500 safe abortion care consultations around the world, most of them in African countries, and 31,000 post-abortion care consultations, most of them in Afghanistan, Yemen, South Sudan and Bangladesh.
In addition to providing safe abortions and post-abortion care, MSF also provides contraceptive counselling and access to a range of contraceptive methods. Our projects offer a range of contraceptive methods to help patients prevent unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. MSF aims to provide the full range of contraceptive methods, including implants, intrauterine devices, injectables, oral contraceptives, condoms and emergency contraception.
