Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy and School of Foreign Service has partnered with the Public Policy and International Affairs Program to help students from underrepresented groups explore careers in public service and international affairs.
Each year, the Program in Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) hosts a variety of free, in-person conferences for undergraduate students across the United States. The PPIA program includes a public service weekend that provides a comprehensive introduction to the diverse career opportunities available in public service and international affairs for aspiring changemakers. For more than 40 years, PPIA has been committed to increasing the diversity of graduate studies in public policy, international affairs, and public service.
In September 2024, the McCourt School of Public Policy and the School of Foreign Service (SFS) co-hosted the PPIA Public Service Weekend, focused on “Building Inclusion for Excellence.” The event attracted students from Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, California, New York, and the United Kingdom, as well as 32 undergraduate students from institutions across the United States and abroad. Of note, 53% of participants identified as first-generation college students. Throughout the weekend, participants participated in activities and discussions at Georgetown University’s Hilltop and Capitol campuses and had the opportunity to explore careers in public policy and international affairs.
The weekend began with a tour of the Hilltop campus led by current SFS students, followed by a welcome from Joel Hellman, dean of the School of Foreign Affairs, and Jason McKnight, vice dean for student affairs at the McCourt School. The opening session, “Connecting Purpose to Action,” was presented by Daphne Jefferson, McCourt Adjunct Professor and Executive Coach.
On the second day, McCourt faculty members Wesley Jo and Nuku Ofori will lead lectures and case study discussions, followed by an alumni panel discussion and networking lunch at the McCourt School’s new building in downtown Washington, DC. was held.

The afternoon included a public narrative exercise facilitated by Michael Paniagua, PPIA’s operations and program manager, and a career planning workshop led by Briana Green, McCourt’s senior director of career development and alumni engagement.
