Bungee fitness is booming in popularity, and for good reason. This is a high-flying workout (literally) that turns gravity into your best workout buddy. Imagine yourself strapped into a harness, suspended from a bungee cord, and training in the air. This workout is low-impact, high-energy, high-intensity, and super fun.

Bounce Studio in Manalapan opened earlier this year and offers classes in bungee fitness, rebounding and kangoo. We recently tried all three and each workout went smoothly.

How does it work? Bungee fitness allows you to strap yourself into a harness and move around while the bungee cord supports your weight. First step on the scale to see how much resistance the cord needs, then your instructor will measure your height so you don’t bump your knees or bump your wrists when you move around.

It may seem scary at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll feel like Peter Pan. In the intro class, the instructor will go very slowly and demonstrate the movements on “land” before “flying”. Since the majority of the class relies on bungee cords, this gives them time to practice each program. By the third time I “jumped” into each exercise, it felt natural. The movements also have fun names, such as lasso, starfish, and kick-up, which are variations of moving your body around a central point. Oh, and did we mention bungee burpees are also part of the workout?

This training is not recommended for people who suffer from motion sickness or dizziness. The movements are adjustable and the bungee workout reduces impact by up to 70%. The class is one hour long, but it’s so much fun that you can’t help but look at the clock.

Another unique class is Kangoo Fitness. This idea was invented in Switzerland and is popular in Europe. How does it work? You have to strap on a ski boot attached to a rebound shoe, which allows it to bounce and jump with every step. Once you have stabilized your body, you will be able to move freely away from the guide bar. If you’re feeling brave, you can jump and run across the studio floor. This is another exercise that strengthens your muscles while making you feel lighter than air.

If you prefer more traditional legwork, rebounding is a good option. Everyone in the class gets on a mini trampoline, and much of the 45-minute class is geared towards lower body exercises. It’s more intense than the other two classes and helps with balance and core training. Although the workout is a lot of fun, getting deep into a squat requires some stability and consistency.

All programs are designed with cardio, endurance, balance, flexibility, toning, and stretching in mind for a full-body workout.

The studio also has a great backstory. Owner Katie Parrinello, a former cheerleader and dancer, knew she needed to add low-impact workouts to her routine after experiencing health concerns and weight gain. A big fan of Pilates, she found herself building muscle without losing weight, so she traveled to Oklahoma to train in bungee fitness. She has lost more than 50 pounds so far and says she now has confidence in herself, her workouts, and her business. Katie said the studio will soon be adding yoga as well.

Some tips before your first class:

To participate in a bungee class, you must be 14 years or older and weigh between 90 and 280 pounds. Wear tight leggings, a high-impact sports bra, and appropriate training shoes. Kangoo would wear boots instead. Wearing shorts over leggings provides an extra layer from the harness. Ask about our waist trainers and foam pads for even more comfort. Please bring a towel and water bottle. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so you can use the restroom and secure yourself in your bungee. It will take a few minutes per person. The studio door will be locked during lesson hours. The studio space can accommodate nine women and an instructor, so classes are small. That means you’ll need to reserve your space early or join the waiting list. After Botox injections, you may need to wait up to 72 hours before getting on the bungee. The levels range from beginner to intermediate to advanced, so start slowly and gradually improve. There is also an intermediate bootcamp option. There’s also a fun selfie wall to take photos after your workout.

Bounce Studio offers rooms for birthday parties, corporate team building, bachelorette and divorce parties, and other special occasions. It can accommodate up to 9 people for 1 hour and 18 people for 2 hours.

Bounce Studio is located at 315 Rte. 9 Alexander Plaza South. Class schedules are available online and through the app. You must register before class. You cannot purchase a single class. The lowest packages start at 3 classes and move up to membership and mileage classes.
