Sam N., a petroleum engineering intern, and Michelle H., an accounting intern, both had their eyes set on one thing: landing their dream careers.

As a North Texas native, STEM enthusiast, and third-generation Aggie, studying petroleum engineering at Texas A&M felt like a natural step in Sam’s career pursuit.

“I believed I could make a bigger impact in STEM fields,” Sam said. “I also wanted a job that would allow me to stay here in Texas. This industry is essential to us.”

For Michelle, her aspirations as a first-generation college student meant building a career on new soil, a challenge she was willing to take.

“When the opportunity comes, you have to take it,” Michelle said. “My parents immigrated from El Salvador in the 1980s, and I knew I had to honor all the sacrifices they made.”

Although Michelle had no experience in oil and gas accounting, she was comfortable asking questions and working with the team on assigned intern projects. She was in a rotation program, which gave her exposure to different areas of the business.

“The pace was very fast. We moved around a lot and learned new things quickly,” Michelle said. “It opened my mind because I got to see all the different parts of accounting that you don’t normally learn in school.”

Similarly, Sam found an oil and gas company in Apache that he called “Goldilocks.” The company is an organization with a diverse and proven set of assets that provides him with engineering experience in traditional, unconventional, national and international fields.

“I was looking for the resources of a very large oil and gas company with the culture, community and work environment of a very small company,” Sam said.

After completing their summer 2024 internships, both Sam and Michelle’s dreams became reality when they were offered full-time positions at Apache.
