Michigan Tech makes a mad dash past LSSU volleyball
Zurek leads the Huskies with 14 kills.
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Technological University volleyball team achieved its second straight victory, defeating Lake Superior State University 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 on Friday at SDC Gym. The Huskies are 7-5 overall and 3-2 in GLIAC play, ending a four-game homestand against Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday.
“Winning 3-0 in this league is always good,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “They play hard and are able to score points in clumps. Our offense continues to be strong and our defense is able to extend rallies and score points.”
Tech took control late in the first set with a 10-2 run. The Huskies hit .387 in the first frame and Meg Raabe had five kills. Casey Miners added three kills, including the game-winner.
In the second, there were 10 ties and the lead changed hands five times. The Lakers led by as many as three points, but Tech regained momentum late with a 7-1 run to take a five-point advantage to 20-15. Amelia Albers went on a 4-0 run to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Rachel Zurek had the final two kills for the Huskies, who dropped six in the set.
LSSU (5-8, 2-3 GLIAC) built a 15-11 lead in the third before the Huskies fought back again. Five different players in Black and Gold scored at least three kills while the attacks were spread out. After Meg Raabe converted a set point, Casey Minors finished the match.
Rachel Zurek had a match-high 14 kills while hitting .522. Paige Wagner hit .533 with 10 kills. Meg Raabe was also in double digits with 10 kills. Tess Hayes set the offense with 43 assists while adding eight digs.
“Rachel is only going to get better. She’s a pleasure to coach and be around,” Jennings added. “Credit to Tess for making some tough sets. She puts the ball where Rachel needs it.”
Five Huskies recorded at least eight attacks, and Jacqueline Yancey had a career-high 12 attacks. Bryn Eriksson (nine points), Brooke Zwik (nine points) and Amelia Albers (eight points) also made an impact defensively.
First serve between the Huskies and Cardinals is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. SVSU played Northern Michigan on Friday and lost 3-1.
