SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – People laced up their shoes to walk for a good cause Saturday morning.

Starting on Morningside College’s campus, people participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk to raise money. Registration fees and donations go toward essential research, care, and support.

Nearly 7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, this is the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

Jessica Duncan, program director for the Iowa Alzheimer’s Disease Chapter, said each participant will receive flowers.

“Different colors mean different reasons for being here,” Duncan said. “Our color is blue, orange if there’s a diagnosis, if you support our mission, which hopefully means getting me out of the job, that’s great.” If it’s a yellow flower, you’re a caregiver, if you’re the only white flower in your walk, it’s a flower of hope for someone who will someday survive, and purple is for someone you’ve lost. ”

This year, more than 100 people participated in the walk.
