STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Quarterback Kyron Drones passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third as Virginia Tech rallied to beat Stanford 31-7 on Saturday. Ta.
Running back Beisl Tuten added 73 rushing yards and a touchdown, and the Hokies (3-3, 1-1 ACC) got the win on a big game from their defense. Tuten, a transfer from North Carolina A&T, surpassed the 3,000-yard mark in his career.
Draughn completed 14 of 19 throws for 201 yards. He had touchdown throws to Stephen Gosnell and Daquan Felton and scrambled 17 yards for Virginia Tech in his first game against Stanford since the 2011 Orange Bowl. Felton had four catches for 84 yards.
While Drone patiently led the offense, Tuten kept the Hokies rolling on the ground. Tuten, who entered the game as the ACC’s No. 2 rusher, repeatedly gouged the conference’s top run defense for big gains and helped the Hokies end a two-game slide.
Justin Lamson, who didn’t play much in the Cardinal’s first four games, completed 13 of 24 passes for 103 yards and one interception.
Virginia Tech held the Cardinal to 258 yards of offense.
After Stanford kicker Emel Kenney’s 53-yard field goal attempt failed on the first drive of the game, Virginia Tech fought back with a quick and efficient scoring drive. Wide receiver Jaylin Lane caught two passes for 26 yards and ran a reverse for 24 yards, setting up Draughns’ 17-yard touchdown to Gosnell.
Tuten drove into the end zone on a fourth-down play in the second quarter, giving the Hokies a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The Hokies started the second half with a 21-0 lead when Drones squeezed a throw between two defenders and connected with Felton for a 55-yard touchdown. Felton caught a pass near the Stanford 35, slipped out of it, and ran straight into the end zone.
Stanford’s only score came from a trick play in the third quarter, when running back Micah Ford threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eric Ayomanolu late in the third quarter.
John Love kicked a 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech: The Hokies had a solid game defensively, but as usual, it was Tuten’s running that carried the day. Offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen set up a few trick plays to alarm Stanford’s defense, but Tuten’s aggressive running style repeatedly forced the Cardinals back. Drones didn’t have a big passing day, but he did a great job moving around in the pocket to avoid Stanford’s pass rush.
What’s next: Tech hosts Boston College in a Thursday night showdown at Lane Stadium on October 17th at 7:30pm ET.
