History Houghton, MI – The Michigan Technological University volleyball team snapped its third straight win with a thrilling five-set victory over Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday at SDC Gym. The Huskies improved to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC after winning the final two sets 25-14 and 15-13.

“I’m glad we were able to advance. Our team naturally plays with a lot of ups and downs, but as the set went on, everything slowly came together,” said Meg Rabe.

The game lasted 2 hours and 17 minutes, with 30 ties and 18 lead changes. After trailing 13-11 in the fifth inning, the Huskies relied on junior outside hitter Meg Rabe to mount a comeback and win. She racked up four kills in a row and sent the SDC gym into a frenzy.

Rabe had a season-high 24 kills, including eight in the fifth set alone. She hit .351 and added four digs and one block.

“The last few points came together really well,” Rabe said. “I’ve been working on some things this year, not playing as much in the back row, but being able to focus more on the front row. I think today was fueled by anger. Staying connected with the setter. I want to continue the GLIAC season with Tess. ”

SVSU hit .344 with three aces and three blocks in the first inning, winning 25-23. Tech tied the score 27-25 in the second set, survived two set points and benefited from two hitting errors late. Meg Rabe had seven kills in the second.

The Cardinals retook the lead at 25-22 in the third, but the Huskies completely dominated in the fourth, 25-14, to advance to the fifth. In the fourth, Tech hit .391 and forced the visitors into 15 errors. Rachel Zurek had five kills in the fourth.

“It was a tough match, but I’m glad we won,” Zurek said. “This is a big win for us next week against Northern. Saginaw is a good team. They’ve worked hard.”

Rachel Zurek had 14 kills and added two blocks. Paige Wagner added 11 kills and Jacqueline Yancey had seven kills and eight digs. Tess Hayes started the offense with 50 digs and led the Huskies with 23 digs. Alena Corwin added 15 digs and eight assists. Bryn Erickson (15) and Brooke Zwik (14) also reached double figures.

Tech travels to Northern Michigan on Thursday and takes on Roosevelt at SDC Gym on Saturday.
