New program launches to help Florida students achieve trade careers

The George Snow Scholarship Fund hopes to expand its program to help more families.

Updated: October 4, 2024 10:19am EDT

Welcome back. Cover your community. There are new programs to increase the number of workforce positions and technical or trade-related careers. So Tim Snow, chairman of the George Snow Scholarship Foundation, and Jeff Perlman, also of the Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation, joined us to discuss the program. Thank you everyone for stopping by. I really appreciate it. Tim. I know you’re a friend of the show. You come here at 9 a.m. and we talk a lot about different scholarship opportunities. So how is this technical and trade-related program different from the typical scholarships being awarded today? Well, it’s a great program. Because we have dedicated funding from the DeSantis Foundation. Because we can help young people who probably won’t go to a four-year college but are focused on career paths in the workforce or technology. If you want to become an electrician, you can do anything from getting a plumbing or electrical qualification. And I might add that now that we have this funding, we can focus on supporting demographics and these kinds of jobs that are in high demand. So, Tim, you know, Jeff, people might actually notice your face. You are a former leader in Delray Beach. So how can I tell Karl that I understand this name correctly? The Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation is involved in this. Well, we are a funding partner on this and the foundation has a strong interest in this deal. Our founder, Carl, believed that not everyone is right for college. And it was perfect to be part of the deal. And you’ve already made a gift of about $200,000. How has it helped you? Do you have more than 20 students? So far? Well, 21 students are being given the opportunity to learn the industry. We hope this is the start of something bigger that will grow this program and reach even more people over the years. So, are you talking to your students? Today, we see pictures of them, for example, attending high school and who may want to enter the workforce soon. Maybe it’s not the path to university. Is that what we’re talking about? Yeah. So we’re looking for high school seniors who are interested in attending these types of programs after graduation, perhaps at Palm Beach State University or another local institution, learning a specialty and entering the workforce immediately. Masu. So we are looking for high school seniors who want to pursue such a career. And they can apply for our scholarships from November 1st. Understood. And, you know, especially Jeff and Carl and Angus DeSantis, they have a history of being in the career field and really building that foundation. This speaks volumes about it. that’s right. He spent about a week at FSU and then left to become an entrepreneur. Therefore, he believes there was more than one path to success in life. So do we. And we’re really excited to be partnering with George Snow. Okay. wonderful. So the goal of this is to get more families applying for positions in 2025. If you’re interested, talk to students, parents, and teachers. If you would like to know about students who wish to participate. absolutely. Okay. Please visit our website.
