LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Students at Fairview Elementary School spent their day learning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities in a different way than most students in Southwest Louisiana. Ta.
Students at Fairview Elementary School chanted in unison, “Cuatro, tres, dos, uno (4, 3, 2, 1).”
LyondellBasell partnered with schools to host English as a Second Language (ESL) events with them to foster a love of STEM in children.
“Partnerships like ours with Fairview Elementary School and Calcasieu Parish paint a picture of what is possible for children of all ethnicities,” said Armando Lara, LyondellBasell site manager. “Here are the electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, maintenance engineers and operators of the future who will fit into the energy and chemical industry in 10 to 15 years.”
Many Hispanic children have grown up being told to stick to traditional careers, but Lara hopes events like this will spark their interest in dreaming beyond their traditions. I’m here.
“Many of us who grew up in Hispanic communities saw ourselves becoming chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and being part of a very productive and forward-looking industry that produced large quantities of the basic materials that we use. Our economy today changes every day so that Hispanic children can do something else and continue to be strong contributors to society. “It’s going to be,” Lara said.
It is equally important to teach children that they have the power to control their future.
“It’s really important for these kids, especially in our community, to know that there are opportunities out there for things that might be of interest,” Fairview Elementary School Vice Principal Nancy Johnson said. I think so,” he said. “Just being bilingual sets them apart from a lot of other kids. Honestly, the opportunities are endless for these kids.”
Fairview Elementary also thanks LyondellBasell for helping teach them the importance of being bilingual.
“Everything they’ve done for us and what we want to do with them will help these students succeed and move forward and become successful members of our community. , to hopefully help work with them someday,” said Fairview Elementary School English Learner Coordinator Laurie Cunningham.
Lara said STEM can seem scary to many people because of the math and science, but it is a fun career and she hopes today’s activities will spark interest in children.
LyondellBasell also awarded Fairview Elementary School a check for $12,500 to further develop the school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
