Fitness Explained: Key Terms and Concepts

A little glossary can be very helpful if you want to avoid getting completely sucked into the world of fitness. Here are some frequently used fitness terms.

Reps: This refers to the repetitions of an exercise within a set. So 10 squats is simply 10 squats.

Set: A series of repetitions performed without a break. Therefore, performing two sets of 10 squats can also be written as performing two 10 squats.

Squat: The art of sitting on an invisible chair. Your thighs will burn, your butt will turn like steel, and you’ll wonder why you weren’t sitting on the couch. But at least your legs and butt will thank you.

Plank: Place your elbows and toes on your mat with your back parallel to the floor. It becomes stiff like the proverbial plank of wood. This exercise especially strengthens your abdominal muscles.

Burpees: Do push-ups, jumps, and sit-ups at the same time? It’s called Burpee. This exercise involves all the excruciating movements and is pure torture.

Aerobic exercise: A training session that gets your heart rate up. This type of exercise is very healthy, prevents cardiovascular disease and keeps you in shape.

HYROX: The hottest new fitness discipline combines eight 1km runs interspersed with eight different exercise stations that test muscle strength and cardio in equal measure. The advantage of HYROX is that none of the exercises are technically complex and are a race against time. In other words, it’s very beginner-friendly and has become very popular all over the world. CrossFit: This is a discipline that combines strength training, cardio, gymnastics, and weightlifting. It can be intense and painful, but it is also highly addictive.

Yoga: Of course, yoga is also part of fitness. Yoga poses and breathing exercises increase flexibility, strengthen muscle strength, and relax the body.

Pilates: Pilates can also improve your physical health. Focuses on deep muscle strengthening, body alignment, and breathing.

Body Pump: A group course where you do strength training to the rhythm of music. This is a fun and comprehensive way to stay healthy.

Body Combat: Body Combat is inspired by martial arts. Punches, kicks, and throws hooks, without an opponent, of course. It’s the ideal exercise to release stress without risking anyone getting hurt.

Aqua Gym and Aqua Bike: Water sports are suitable for people who want to build muscle without breaking a sweat. However, please be careful. It may not seem like it, but these exercises are extremely strenuous. You will definitely feel your feet.
