SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Bossier Parish Community College’s nursing and health department dean says there is a lack of medical programs in rural areas.
BPCC has expanded its programs to Natchitoches and Sabine Valley (numerous) campuses. These new additions will enable rural students to pursue in-demand careers in the medical and administrative fields.
New programs offered include electrocardiography, emergency medical technician, phlebotomy, medical records, billing assistant, and more. BPCC says it helps students around school and work schedules.
“And this is extremely beneficial. On the other hand, if a student finishes the paramedic program and decides they want to come back and enroll in a paramedic program with a paramedic of course, the paramedic is available 24 hours a day. It’s needed,” one educator explained. “They’re always on call, so they have a schedule that works well for them to come to school, and they can work as paramedics or whatever and advance their career while working.”
Double enrollment is possible for third and fourth year high school students.
In addition to the new program, BPCC has updated its classroom and laboratory space to provide more hands-on training opportunities for students. Paramedic students at the Natchitoches campus can hone their skills in a life-sized ambulance simulator.
