DETROIT – Raising awareness of the issues and realities surrounding mental health is a focus for many people and organizations.
World Mental Health Day is October 10th. Many advocates describe the day as a day to discuss mental health education and advocacy against social stigma.
Some believe that mental health issues in various communities remain untold. They often go untreated.
Access to mental health resources remains a challenge for many.
“It’s so important that people understand themselves and understand how to ground themselves,” said Detroit City Council President Pro Tem James Tate.
Earlier this year, Tate, the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Health launched an initiative called “Defending the Crown.” This is a campaign that promotes the importance of maintaining overall mental health without shame or fear.
As part of its “Save the Crown” initiative, the city is asking residents to fill out a simple survey. This research will help city leaders better decide where to prioritize and allocate funds and resources.
“It’s huge,” Tate said. “Just 19 simple questions. But they are personal questions. We understand that confidentiality is important. We are not asking for your name. All we want to know is the zip code where you live so we can see what’s going on in this part of the city or that part of the city.”
