Brock Academy hosted Robert Toombs Christian Academy on Wednesday for Senior Day. The Gators won 7-1.
Brock Academy played its final game of the season at home, hosting Robert Toombs Christian Academy. Seniors McKenna Furnari, Kaylee Cardel, Hope McCormick, Piper Finley and Mia Harris all played their final games in front of their home fans on the night the Lady Gators won 7-1. .
Entering Wednesday’s game, the Lady Gators were looking for another win in the final week of the regular season. A win is most important in this final as Brock Academy is still battling for a spot in the playoffs.
The Lady Gators got off to a fast start with Maralyn Belcher scoring on a wild pitch, and the seniors extended their lead in the bottom of the first inning when McKenna Furnari’s double brought home Kaylee Cardel. In the fifth inning, Hope McCormick’s batted ball put out two more runners, and Brantley Claxton’s hit allowed Mia Harris to score, increasing the 2-1 lead to 5-1.
After the game, all supporters of the Lady Gators softball team were invited to the field and surrounded the bases as the seniors took one final lap around the bases. Friends, family, teachers and coaches greeted the players with high fives and hugs.
Head coach Ashley Burke spoke about the departure of the seniors. “These five seniors were actually my first group when I started here, when I was in eighth grade,” Burke said. “We’ve been able to see them grow over the last five years and step up into more leadership roles. It’s hard to get past them this year, especially with five seniors. Every practice, Every game, they’re always finding things to improve on,” and they’re always looking for people to encourage them. ”

Losing just under half of your roster to graduation is tough for any team, but the Gators have plenty of depth and their young players have watched their seniors and grown throughout the season.
The season isn’t over yet for the Gators. The playoffs are scheduled to begin next week, and Coach Burke believes anything is possible when a bright light is turned on.
