LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Medical experts are encouraging Kentuckians to get the latest COVID-19 vaccination.
“While we are no longer tracking COVID-19 cases, the numbers are still on the rise. And we have even heard of a few COVID-19 hospitalizations this year here in Mercer County. ,” says registered nurse Susan Reidnower.
The Mercer County Health Department said it sees about 100 patients at its drive-up vaccine clinic every Friday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The clinic offers both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
“We’d be happy to meet anyone from any county, especially if you’re from Mercer County,” said Ben White, environmental health program manager for the Mercer County Health Department.
In both Mercer County and Lexington, people are receiving the COVID-19 vaccine at the same time as their flu shot. In both regions, demand for coronavirus vaccines is increasing moderately as winter approaches.
Lexington pharmacies are offering walk-in vaccines.
Pharmacy owner and pharmacist Clarence Sullivan says he encourages everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine. He said the severe impact of the current circulating virus strain is not as severe as previous ones.
“As the other pharmacist here said, the new vaccines are being tailored this year to be more in line with what’s going on with the variants,” Sullivan said.
Experts in both fields said there is currently no significant spike in the number of infections, but there is a slight increase.
