The district cited a lack of funding for the changes.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill Schools has confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that the district plans to lay off in-school mental health therapists at the end of 2024.

The district said in a statement that a lack of funding is the cause, but other solutions are being considered.

“With anticipated budget shortfalls in the coming school year, we must explore sustainable ways to ensure we continue to provide these services to our children,” the district said in a statement, in part.

But parents say they are shocked and disappointed.

“It would be a good idea to have it there because it will help the students when their parents are away or when they don’t have time,” neighbor Dennis Aikens said.

Another resident, Brandi Britton, also shared her concerns for the students.

“I’m scared for them. I don’t want to see them get extreme degrees because they don’t know where else to go or what else to do,” she said. . “They can cut back somewhere. It’s not like they’re going to take anything away from sports or athletics or things like that or academics. I think they’ll allow something like that. ”

WCNC Charlotte Schools asked the district whether it should expect further layoffs as a result of the budget deficit. A spokesperson said: “Nothing has been finalized.”
