MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) – Washington State University of Ohio held YES Days, an annual event for students from across the central Ohio Valley to learn about engineering, science and technology.
Students visited the School of Engineering and School of Arts and Sciences buildings and watched presenters explain their roles in their fields.
Joseph Hughes, research engineer at Kraton Polymers, said the event will bring many opportunities to students and businesses.
This is a great event for the school and for the state of Washington. Because it allows students to participate in the classroom, look around, and see what it will be like to be a student here in the future. It’s also an opportunity for many businesses and organizations involved in STEM careers to interact with kids and help them learn about what careers are possible here in the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The event featured 30 speakers who taught children about STEM careers and why STEM is essential to our community. One of the celebrants at Robert Funeral Home taught the children about embalming tools and how they work. Another presenter from Marietta College brought in an inflatable planetarium to teach students about astronomy.
Mr Hughes said it was important for children to learn about STEM careers early on.
It is very important to involve children early on because they still have a chance to make different choices before it is too late. If you have children in high school, it may be too late to change their grades or the courses they took in high school. 7th graders are old enough for them to understand.
A total of 700 students participated in this event.
