BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Hokies had a successful weekend at the SMU Classic, earning third place for the men (303 points) and fifth place for the women (253 points). Back at home, the Hokies dominated Carson Newman, winning 143-108 for the boys and 144-104 for the girls.
Women in technology:
Carmen Weiler-Sastre received the Women’s Swimmer of the Year award for her outstanding performance at the SMU Classic. She set an SMU pool record in the 200 back in 1:52.55, placed first in the 100 back (52.17), fourth in the 100 free (48.75) and third in the 200 free (1:46.07).
Emma Atkinson, Chiara Klein, Emily Cresson and Athena Meneses Kovacs placed fourth in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:18.02. Emily Santos placed second in the 200 chest in 2:14.45.
After returning home, Esther Park dominated Carson Newman in the breaststroke, taking first place in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:04.32) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:19.95). The Hokies also showed overwhelming strength in the freestyle events, with Maddie Grafmiller winning the 1000 free in 10 minutes, 31.83 seconds, followed by Fannie Gulinovic in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.54 and the 100 free in 51 seconds. Ranked 1st with 21. Kate Anderson took first place in the 500 free (5:00.68) and Anna Summers took first place in the 500 free (23.95).
Sofia Salvato, Park, Christine Dutobeck and Parker Bolduc led the Hokies to a first-place finish in the 400-meter medley relay in 3:46.84. Gurinovic, Summers, Bolduc and Egner finished the day with a first place finish in the 200 free relay (1:35.28).
Technician:
Carles Col Martí dominated the SMU Classic, setting both the meet and pool records in the 200 breast with a first place time of 1:50.77. He also took second in the 100m chest (51.61) and second in the 200mm (1:42.60).
Yousef Ramadan placed third in the 50 free (19.63) and second in the 100 fly (45.62) and 200 fly (1:45.60). Brendan Whitefield also placed first in the 100 free with a score of 42.65.
On the board, Nathan Cox placed fourth in the 1 meter with a total of 262.50 points.
Ramadan, Col Marty, William Hayon and Brendan Whitfield took first place in the 200-meter medley relay (1:23.60) and second place in the 400-meter medley relay (3:04.85), followed by Whittild, Luis Dominguez Kalonje, Mario Mora Yanez and Nico were the winners. Garcia Saiz placed third in the 800 relay (6:25.80) and 200 free relay (1:18.20).
Back in Christiansburg, Lee Naber took first place in the 1000 free (9:31.16) and 500 free (4:37.73), and Jakub Poliaczyk took first in the 200 free (1:37.73). 39 seconds 48). Tanishq’s George Mathew finished first in the 100m free (45.05 points) and 50 free (20.39 points).

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Swimmer Carson Newman committed to No. 1 nationally ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 12, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Eagles lost to the Hokies 287-212. Carson Newman finished the day with a total of 14 first-place finishes and 28 second-place finishes.
“It was a great game for us,” Eagles head coach Ben Young said. “From a Division I competitive standpoint, the past few years we’ve been coming into the game with a loss, but this game, the team came into the game and played very well and ended up being very positive. It was completely different in the sense that it produced a different result.
The men’s team competed against the Virginia Tech team and had six first-place finishes with a score of 143-108. Male swimmers recorded six first-place finishes and 14 second-place finishes. The team had Daniel de Oliveria take first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.98, as well as Jake Sell, Ryan Berry and Arthur Gluzman.
On the girls side, the Eagles were even with the Hokies, but ultimately lost 144-104. The team finished the competition with seven first-place finishes and 14 second-place finishes. The girls’ top performances were Megan Corcoran, who won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:06.54, and Maria Tiruri, who won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:05.19.
“The standout players of the day were Daniel de Oliveria, Olivia Muir and Megan Corcoran,” Young said. “They had three great races by their swimmers. The standout newcomer today was Ryan Berry in the 200 yard breaststroke.”
This is the first of three Division I trips the Eagles will take this season, with games scheduled at the University of South Carolina and Georgia Tech.
“The environment against the Hokies was great, and our approach was great overall,” Young said. “I think we normally went into this game already defeated and prepared to lose. We tried to change the narrative and not focus on the final score. We’re focused on how we can improve and move forward as a program. I think the team kept its energy and stayed consistent, so I was really proud to see that.”
The Eagles will take a week off before returning to play SAC opponent Mars Hill, which finished fifth in the preseason coaches poll. The tournament will be held on Saturday, October 26th at 11 a.m. at Harrell Pool in Mars Hill, North Carolina.
