The 2024-2025 ACC Media Poll was released today, and it paints a pessimistic picture for Virginia Tech basketball this season.

Mike Young and his team were ranked 14th in this year’s poll, just ahead of Florida State University, University of California, Stanford University and Boston University.

Duke was selected as the ACC winner in the poll, receiving 42 first-place votes. North Carolina, which finished second, received 11 votes, and Wake Forest, which finished third, received one first-place vote.

Earlier this offseason, On3Sports released its ACC Basketball Coaching Rankings and Young came in at No. 9. Duke’s John Scheyer took the top spot, with UNC’s Hubert Davis, Wake Forest’s Steve Forbes, UVA’s Tony Bennett and Clemson’s Brad Brownell rounding out the top five.

On3 had this to say about Young being ranked 9th:

“Young is also a low-profile coach who consistently delivers great results and gets the most out of Virginia Tech’s roster.

Utilizing the transfer portal helped shape their playing style and resulted in more consistent results with two NCAA Tournament berths and two NIT invites.

Young’s next step will be to push deep into March Madness and build momentum to move the program forward within a conference that features youth. ”

I think this is a reasonable ranking, but Young has a chance to move even higher if he can show he can get the Hokies back in the NCAA Tournament. Going into this year, Duke and North Carolina seem to be the favorites to win the ACC, but the gap between them is widening, and the Hokies could be one of the teams to make a breakthrough. In the standings. They have made solid additions through the transfer portal to make up for their losses, and I think they will be one of the most intriguing teams in the conference next season.
