Cyberattack on Texas Tech University Health Network disrupts patient care in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — As the Texas Tech University health network faces the aftermath of a cyberattack, many El Paso patients said the cyberattack is impacting their care.

After a September cyberattack forced Texas Tech University to delay or shut down certain services, many said health care services were still being affected here in El Paso and across Texas.

“I’m just trying to get my health back. It’s a little scary because I don’t know what’s going on,” said Texas Tech patient Crystal Castro.

Castro is recovering from a Caesarean section and a herniated disc, but due to technology shutdowns, he is unable to undergo CT scans and has no access to painkillers.

“We can’t do anything until the system is restored,” Castro said. “I keep being told to call every day to make sure the system is up and running.”

Castro said she fears she’s not the only one affected by all of this, and it appears she’s right.

KFOX14/CBS4 issued a social media appeal to viewers affected by the power outage, and many El Pasoans reached out.

One commenter said, “It’s frustrating to have an appointment cancelled.” Another commenter said, “I can’t get my prescription refilled.” And another, presumably an employee of a network affiliate, says, “We can’t schedule the procedures that patients need.”

KFOX14/CBS4 reached out to Texas Tech Health El Paso for comment, but the company said it would not say more until the investigation into the cyberattack is complete.

If you or someone you know is affected by this service interruption, please contact the KFOX14/CBS4 newsroom at 915-845-5369 or send us a message through social media.
