The transformation was so amazing that his gym mates accused him of taking steroids and accused his wife of having plastic surgery.
He even laughed when his personal trainer, RJ, told him the simple secret to weight loss and optimal health he learned at Utah Health. That’s when he and his wife, Tina, quit working as personal trainers.
RJ Slade served this country as an elite Army Ranger. But after being wounded in combat in Iraq in 2005, his life changed dramatically. I went from the extreme physical fitness required to become a ranger to the point where I needed an epidural steroid spinal injection. By 2013, he was in a wheelchair and retired from the military.
Many health problems followed, including muscle atrophy, weight gain, fatigue, and indigestion. The combination of these illnesses impaired his ability to heal.

With the determination of a ranger, he devoted all his efforts to his recovery. He trained hard and tried to be careful about everything he ate, counting his macros carefully. Despite all efforts, his health did not improve and no matter what he did, he could not lose the extra weight.
He and Tina were visiting Dr. Whit Roberts at Utah Health Medical Center. They were pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of the program. I didn’t cut calories, I didn’t count calories, I didn’t calculate macros, I didn’t eliminate entire food categories. I never gorged myself on meat or fat. There was no fad.
At Health Utah, we’ve learned that there are only three steps to losing weight effectively.
1. Identify and address underlying health issues that are hindering your weight loss efforts.
“Literally millions of people struggle to lose weight or gain weight back because their bodies are out of balance and unhealthy,” Roberts says. Health Utah combines a thorough review of your health, professional testing, and proprietary health analysis to identify potential obstacles to weight loss. The Utah Department of Health will then systematically address these issues.
2. Identify the foods that are uniquely healing for your body and the foods that are harmful.
Even the best weight loss programs are missing this very important element. Thirty years of experience has proven to Roberts just how important this is. One example of this was his patient, Ashley. She ate clean and worked out at the gym for an hour every day, but couldn’t lose a single ounce. She also suffered from anxiety, depression, and migraines.
Doctors at Utah Health Care independently identified corn as causing inflammation in her body and ordered her to eliminate it from her diet. As a result, my weight started to decrease and my migraines, anxiety, and depression all disappeared.
“This may sound like an isolated case, but virtually everyone develops food sensitivities during stressful times in their lives,” Roberts says. “This type of sensitivity doesn’t necessarily cause abdominal pain, it’s just hard to recognize because it can cause fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, stubborn weight, and more. Another surprising thing is that we usually do not consume healthy foods such as broccoli and bananas. The important thing is to identify them as possible culprits before effective weight loss. , it needs to be addressed or eliminated from the diet.”
3. Address the brain patterns and chemical rewards that perpetuate obesity.
The brain is wired to eat foods that produce the most energy and are easiest to digest. Roberts explains that the food industry has exploited nature to create addictive foods that provide quick and easy energy, but sadly can make you feel sick over time. Every time you eat these foods, feel-good chemicals activate your brain’s reward centers so you can get a reward. Willpower alone is never enough when your brain is working against you. Health Utah provides skills, tools, and therapies to help you retrain your brain.

Health Utah’s program has been life-changing for RJ and Tina. We both lost a lot of weight. Tina went from a size 10 to a size 2. RJ is down to 5.3% body fat. RJ currently holds qualifications in sports and nutrition, consults with Good Earth, and competes in fitness competitions.
