(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Northwestern University is suing one of the manufacturers of its COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccines that are helping protect millions of people around the world from the new coronavirus and its variants would not have been possible without research conducted at Northwestern University’s Chicago area.

Northwestern’s lawyers made the argument this week in a lawsuit against Moderna in federal court in Delaware.

The lawsuit alleges that the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna relies on discoveries made by three researchers at Northwestern University’s International Institute for Nanotechnology.

The lawsuit also alleges that Moderna could not have developed the vaccine as quickly as it did without Northwestern’s technology.

British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline filed a similar lawsuit against Moderna this week, accusing it of infringing GSK’s patents and patents related to the development of vaccines for coronavirus and respiratory syncytial virus.

The school did not disclose the details of the damages, but said it did not intend to stop using the Moderna vaccine.

WBBM has reached out to Northwestern for comment, but has not yet received a response.
