Research candidates running for North Carolina Secretary of State in the 2024 election

Two candidates are competing for North Carolina’s Secretary of State in this year’s general election.

Democratic incumbent Elaine Marshall, who has held the position for more than 25 years, is running against Republican challenger Chad Brown.

The Commissioner, responsible for business oversight, is responsible for registering trademarks, managing land records, and overseeing legislative lobbyists.

Unlike other states, North Carolina’s secretary of state does not serve as election administrator. Instead, elections will be administered by a nonpartisan State Board of Elections appointed by the governor and an executive director employed by the board.

Ms. Marshall became Secretary in 1997 and became the first woman elected to a statewide executive branch in North Carolina. She is currently running for her eighth term and had no opponent in the Democratic primary.

Mr. Brown, who currently works as a regional manager for a steel company, previously served as mayor of the Town of Stanley and as chairman of the Gaston County Commission.
