The Institute of Archeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) carried out archaeological reconnaissance operations in Turkiye’s Yydur province with the participation of Turkish experts, Azer News reported.
The archaeological reconnaissance team included the academic staff of the institute and was led by history doctor MM Huseynov, with the participation of members SH Ashulov and BM Djalilov.
The expedition is the first archaeological expedition carried out by Azerbaijani archaeologists in a foreign country and represents a new collaborative research effort between Azerbaijan and Turkiye.
The results of the reconnaissance surveys carried out in the first year of the five-year project are of great importance in shedding light on important issues in the archeology of Eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan. Within a short period of time, settlements dating from the Late Chalcolithic to Early and Middle Bronze Ages were identified, along with urban ruins, fortresses, and numerous kurgans. Surface materials were collected and the most important artifacts were transferred to the Eidul Museum.
The newly identified sites are closely related to the heritage of Azerbaijan, particularly Nakhchivan, and it is hoped that future research will yield exciting discoveries that will contribute to a shared history. One of these newly discovered sites will undergo extensive excavation in the coming years under the guidance of Azerbaijani archaeologists.
