DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — “The world is your oyster.”
Durham Public Schools’ eighth-graders gathered Tuesday morning for Accerler8, the district’s annual career exploration day.
More than 70 vendors are lined up in front of Durham County Stadium, showcasing the career paths students can take, from healthcare to energy, environment and utilities.
“Eighth graders are thinking about high school,” said Darian Harris, current director of technical education. “This is a great opportunity to connect high school students’ programming with what they want to do.”
Small and medium-sized companies such as Novo Nordisk aim to expose students to their industry and broaden their perspective on the world of work.

Makayla Oldham, DPS 8th grade
Students Makayla Oldham and Araya Pegram already have specific careers in mind, such as forensic scientist or animal care worker. However, they said they enjoyed what the career fair had to offer.
“I love that there’s so much to do and so many different things to explore,” Oldham said. “Even if you don’t want to do it, you still have the opportunity to learn about it.”
Pegram said she enjoyed learning about electricity in one of the tents.
“We learned about bolts. There were two little plug-like things that plugged into the machine,” Pegram said. “It shows the number of volts, and when you plug it into a machine, the voltage goes up, and when it goes down, it shows the voltage.” If you take it like a stick. ”
District officials say there’s no pressure to figure it all out at a young age, but there’s something exciting about learning about some of the opportunities that are out there as students begin preparing for high school.
“This fair provides our students with an opportunity to explore different careers, so they have some ideas and are ready when they go to high school,” said Keshia, DPS assistant middle school superintendent. Dr. Rogers said.
She said, “Seeing the kids light up and ask questions when they see different careers that they might not have thought of. It’s hands-on, so that excitement really excites me.” Ta.
