Huawei Technologies Co. has opened a large campus on the outskirts of Shanghai to serve as a hub for innovation in China’s push towards technological self-sufficiency, demonstrating the company’s resilience under U.S. sanctions.

Huawei said the Lianqiu Lake campus will have more than 10 times the floor space of Alphabet’s Googleplex headquarters in Mountain View, California, and will accommodate about 35,000 researchers.

The first group of employees arrived on Oct. 14, but when the Post Office visited this week, only two blocks were occupied and much of the spacious complex was empty.

According to a report in Chinese media outlet The Paper, district officials said around 20,000 employees are expected to arrive around Lunar New Year in February, increasing the number of employees to 30,000 by the end of 2026. He says he will.

The 2 million square meter (21.5 million square foot) research and development center will be a key role for Huawei, which already has campuses in Dongguan and Shenzhen in southern Guangdong province, as well as for China. We are driving breakthroughs in chips and other areas.
