Concerns about the physical strength of elderly drivers | Elderly people

Unfortunately, simply requiring tests for drivers over 80 will not prevent tragic accidents (on October 22nd, a judge in Scotland called for mandatory testing for drivers over 80 after a fatal crash. Ta). It also requires more thorough procedures by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) when assessing drivers’ dementia diagnosis reports. A close friend of mine was in a minor accident after being diagnosed with dementia and, understandably, her family took away her car keys. They also reported the dementia diagnosis to the DVLA, with the expectation that her license would be revoked as a result.

The DVLA took several months to carry out the envisaged assessment. The evaluation included requesting medical records from the hospital she visited a year ago when her condition was in its very early stages and she was still able to drive safely.

The final result? As far as the DVLA is concerned, she can keep her license. Thankfully, her family kept that information a secret from her as it was absolutely unsafe for her to drive and she could be a danger to herself or others if she was allowed to drive. . This system is completely unfit for purpose and the results are very worrying.

In Spain, as in the UK, your driving license must be renewed every 10 years. However, after the age of 65, you will need to renew your Spanish license every five years. The renewal process includes a medical examination at an accredited assessment center, which includes physical and mental health tests, including vision and hearing tests. The cost of license renewal varies depending on the exam center, but ranges from approximately 20 euros to 50 euros, with a mandatory government fee of approximately 25 euros. As long as you meet these standards, there is no upper limit to your driving.

If the UK implemented a similar process, not only would there be fewer dangerous drivers on the roads, but medical problems would be identified and dealt with earlier than they currently are.

I’m almost 82 years old and looking to renew my license. I would be willing to undergo and pay for a similar test to give me and my family, as well as my neighbors, peace of mind.
