MADRID, Oct. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — START Cancer Research Center (“START”), a world leader in early stage cancer clinical trials, today announced a new collaboration with Fundación Rioja Salud. announced a strategic partnership. (i) the promotion and protection of health; (ii) training, education, research, development and innovation in health sciences and biotechnology, including drug development and medical education; and (iii) the integration of research and clinical practice in healthcare settings. – Rioja state. This partnership marks the establishment of an additional START early stage unit in La Rioja and expands START’s robust network, which currently includes eight clinical trial sites and a team of 25 principal investigators (PIs) around the world .

The expansion builds on START’s existing footprint in Spain, including two locations in Madrid at Sanchinaro Hospital and Jiménez Díaz University Hospital, and a location at Nou Delfos Hospital in Barcelona. This announcement follows START’s June announcement of a partnership with Northwell Health to establish two new early-stage clinical trial sites in New York.

The new START site will be co-located with San Pedro University Hospital, which admits 1,800 new cancer patients annually. Importantly, it is located in the heart of the northern regions of Aragon, Pais Vasco, Navarra, Castile and León, Cantabria and Asturias. These states have a combined population of 8.1 million people, many of whom live more than 320 miles from the nearest public oncology trial sites, Madrid and Barcelona. “We are excited to be working with START,” said Juan Carlos Oliva Pérez, CEO of the Rioja Salud Fund. “It will enable us to provide front-line cancer research and treatment options.”

The new START early stage unit in La Rioja is expected to expand the range of cancer clinical trials available to patients in Spain and complement existing facilities in Madrid and Barcelona.
