Research dogs help discover rare and endangered plants in Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two research dogs are about to embark on a journey to northern Arizona to find rare and endangered plant species.

Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden is known for its beautiful scenery and peaceful atmosphere, but a big part of its mission is the study and conservation of desert plants.

Circe and Muon are botanical garden dogs who use their noses to help researchers.

Steve Blackwell is leading the upcoming research trip.

“Fortunately, we have some support from the Arizona Lottery to do this project, but we’re going to have our dogs find an endangered cactus in northern Arizona and see how it grows. I want to help you talk about how it works.”

Mr Blackwell said the plants they were looking for were becoming increasingly rare.

“Having a dog allows you to cover as much of their habitat as possible,” he said. “It’s really valuable because we can’t do everything ourselves.”

Organizers say most of the dogs came from shelters and shelters.
