HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Portland State women’s soccer team fought back in the closing stages of a game against Utah Tech on Friday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium, scoring late in the game to tie the Trail Blazers 1-1.

The tie was the Vikings’ first of the season, bringing their record to 1 win, 5 losses and 1 tie, while Utah Tech’s fourth tie of the year brought their record to 3 wins, 2 losses and 4 ties.

The Vikings and Trail Blazers faced off for the second time in a scoreless first half with both teams creating multiple chances. The Vikings had nine shots and three corner kicks in the first 45 minutes but were unable to score. Starting goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham held the Trail Blazers in check, making five saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

The Trail Blazers took the lead early in the second half, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute. Portland State’s offense continued to apply pressure, but it wasn’t until the 83rd minute that they tied the game, when Ocean Rideout took a perfect pass from Avi Hoffman and fired a shot over the Utah Tech goalkeeper to score.

Utah Tech threatened in the final minutes, but Cunningham and the Vikings held them off, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Trail Blazers outshot the Vikings 18-15, with each team taking seven shots. Five Vikings players had three or more shots in the game, but Rideout led the way with two of four shots. Cunningham played the full 90 minutes as goalkeeper, making six saves.

Portland State is scheduled to return to action on Sunday, concluding non-conference play against Seattle University at Hillsboro Stadium at 1:05 p.m.
