GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The aviation industry is typically a male-dominated field, but one organization is showing young women they are just as good as their male counterparts in the cockpit.
On Saturday, several girls participated in the 10th annual Girls in Aviation Day at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
“Our event, hosted by AB Flight, will have several events on the ramp, there will be static aircraft displays and girls will be able to stick their heads into the cockpit of an airplane and see the aviation electronics light up,” said Samantha Amy, president of the Women’s Aviation Association Great Lakes Chapter.
They were introduced to a variety of STEM activities available in aviation, including the four forces of flight and testing avionics.
The event aims to show women that there are opportunities in this field – only 20% of the workforce is female, according to organisers.
“Having events like this allows us to expose people in the community to the industry at a young age and really spark their interest in pursuing a career in this industry,” Amy told FOX 17.
Organizers hope to hold the event on an even larger scale next year.
