Martin Fitzwater, aka “The Martian,” has two of the most impressive pins ever displayed on the bodybuilding stage, but a recent Instagram post says it took some trial and error to get there. The man Jay Cutler has recommended as a sleeper for the 2024 Olympia Men’s Open division tells the tale of how he built those impressively muscular legs.
Fitzwater, who will win the 2024 Detroit Pro and compete in the 60th Mr. Olympia, has legs like tree trunks, but he says that it was difficult to achieve the beauty of balance at first. “Earlier in my career, I had small hamstrings and a lot of emphasis on my quads,” Fitzwater explains. “My quads were so strong and I was quad dominant, so I was doing all my movements with my quads!” After realizing that the majority of his training was done with his quads, this incredibly built man decided to right the balance. “Now I split it into a hamstring day and a quad day, and I focus only on those muscles on that day,” he explains. “I do isolations first, then heavy compound movements, and then I slam my muscles into the ground afterwards!”

Here are some examples of how to break down these movements, as shown in Fitzwater’s accompanying video.
Hamstring Day
Isolation: Hamstring Curl Compound: Cable Deadlift
Quadriceps Day
Isolation: Leg Extension Compound: Leg Press
While Futi’s Water’s avid followers were quick to express their appreciation for his lower-body training tips and muscular legs, one reader asked why it was important to do isolation movements first and compound movements second. “… I think it’s a good technique to reduce injury,” he replied.
Martin Fitzwater is definitely one to watch, says four-time Mr. Olympia winner Jay Cutler, who recently praised the candidate on his show, “Cutlercast.” “I think Fitzwater’s a hidden gem,” Cutler says. “I’m impressed. He seems pretty slow.” With just a few weeks until the biggest physiques in bodybuilding do battle, the competition is sure to heat up. Olympia Weekend runs from October 10-13 in Las Vegas.
