A scientific conference was held on 29-30 August 2024. The conference focused on aligning MPOX research with epidemic response goals. The conference was part of a comprehensive effort to align research initiatives with the practical needs of MPOX epidemic control, and it highlighted collaboration, regulatory and ethical considerations, and affected country leadership. The conference brought together more than 2,500 participants from affected countries and around the world, including scientists, representatives of member states, public health experts, funders, and private sector representatives, to accelerate the development of innovations to control the MPOX epidemic.
The meeting aimed to outline key steps and timelines for developing an emergency MPOX research response agenda, strengthening collaboration and partnerships, and closing research gaps. Emphasis was placed on keeping affected countries and their researchers at the forefront of developing the research agenda.
Key principles guiding the meeting included collaboration, leadership from affected communities, alignment with pandemic response goals, and a people-centred focus.
