The best way to prevent influenza, COVID-19, and their potentially serious complications is to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends getting the influenza vaccine in September or October. Residents can receive a new COVID-19 vaccine as long as two months have passed since their last COVID-19 vaccination. After vaccination, it takes about two weeks for the body to produce antibodies and provide protection.
In addition to getting vaccinated, take daily precautions recommended to reduce the spread of influenza and COVID-19.
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
· If you are sick, limit your contact with others as much as possible to prevent infecting others.
・Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue. Please throw away used tissues in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your bent elbow.
· Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
・Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. This is how bacteria spreads.
· Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with the virus that causes influenza and COVID-19.
· For the flu, the CDC recommends people stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever has subsided, except for medical treatment or other necessities. The fever should go down without using antipyretics.
· Click here for guidance on staying home for COVID-19 CDC recommendations.
