COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A Columbus-based nonprofit is encouraging girls to enter the technology field at an early age.

Tech Corps, based on Columbus’ north side, hosted a special event Friday. Elementary and middle school girls who completed the organization’s summer program shared the results of projects such as digital animation, app development, and coding.

They also had a Q&A session with Google representatives to answer their career-related questions. Organizers said programs like this are essential.

An online networking group called Women Tech Network said women make up only 35% of STEM employees in the United States. Women are underrepresented at major technology companies such as Facebook, Apple, Google, and Microsoft, especially in management positions.

Women make up only about 21% of students earning bachelor’s degrees in computer science, and only 22% of bachelor’s degrees in engineering.
