SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. — Sheriff Christina Corpuz announced the creation of a childcare center exclusively for San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office employees, according to a news release from the department.

The facility is designed to support law enforcement professionals by providing accessible, affordable child care with extended hours to accommodate non-traditional shifts, according to the release. .

“The challenges for law enforcement don’t stop when the shift ends,” Corpus said. “…By supporting the health of law enforcement families, this initiative also strengthens the safety and security of the communities we serve.”

The daycare center aims to improve employee retention and recruitment by addressing the challenge of work-life balance, a key issue in law enforcement. According to the release, Corpus also highlighted the facility’s potential to save taxpayers money by reducing recruitment costs and overtime costs associated with employee turnover.

The 30×30 initiative aims to increase the proportion of women in police ranks to 30% by 2030. This video takes a deep dive into why this is important for better policing and how police departments across the country are making progress toward this goal.

Additionally, this effort is consistent with the Sheriff’s Office and the state’s efforts to eliminate gender disparities in law enforcement. Corpus highlighted the agency’s commitment to the 30×30 pledge, which aims to have 30% of academy classes comprised of women by 2030.

“By prioritizing the needs of our employees and families, we are sending a strong message that law enforcement is a career for everyone and we are committed to building an inclusive and diverse future. We’re sending them,” Corpus said.
