While much of the college football world was focused on the Alabama-Georgia showdown Saturday night, two NFL legends were watching as Texas Tech took on Cincinnati.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who played for the Red Raiders in college, never misses an opportunity to badmouth his favorite target, former Bearcats tight end Travis Kelce.

After a back-and-forth game, Texas Tech escaped with a 44-41 lead after Cincinnati kicker Nathan Hawks missed a 51-yard field goal, forcing overtime as time expired.

Kelce couldn’t believe it.

I really thought the Bearcats would find a way to win in the end…hmm https://t.co/bY8X5HedAY

It was a game that offensive stars like Mahomes and Kelce definitely liked, as both teams combined for 85 points in the Big 12 battle. Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Thorsby had 426 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, and Texas Tech running back Taj Brooks had 172 yards and two scores on the ground.

Red Raiders quarterback Behren Morton also threw for 251 yards, two touchdowns, and zero picks.

Texas Tech is currently 4-1 on the season, but the schedule gets even tougher with games against Arizona State, Iowa State, Colorado State and Oklahoma State. As for Cincinnati, they are 3-2 but still face tough challenges against UCF, Colorado, Iowa State and Kansas State.

Mahomes can boast about his tight end, but both players are sure to trade a win from their alma mater for another win on Sunday.

The Chiefs start the season 3-0 with wins over the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Atlanta Falcons. The AFC West’s first game of the season is Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, and Kelce will be looking for his first impressive individual performance of the 2024 season.

The future Hall of Famer hasn’t been himself in terms of individual performance, with just eight catches for 69 yards and zero touchdowns through three games. But playing against the Chargers might be just what he needs, as he had 12 catches for 179 yards and one touchdown in last year’s win over a district rival.

A touchdown or two could help him overcome the Bearcats’ loss.
