Travis Kelce named Kansas City Chiefs career receptions leader

Travis Kelce passed Tony Gonzalez as the Kansas City Chiefs’ career receptions leader with his second catch against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The nine-time Pro Bowl tight end had a 38-yard reception on Kansas City’s opening drive, tying Gonzalez’s record of 916 catches in 12 seasons from 1997 to 2008. Kelce then caught a 5-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes. It was the Chiefs’ fourth drive to set a record early in their 12th season with the team.

Taylor Swift wasn’t in attendance at SoFi Stadium to watch the latest performance by Kelce, 34, who ranks fourth in NFL history in receptions by a tight end. He follows Gonzalez, who along with Jason Witten and Antonio Gates, played five seasons in Atlanta and had 1,325 catches after his career with the Chiefs.

Kelce lagged behind statistically in the first three games of the season, making just eight catches for 69 yards as Mahomes called for extra attention from opposing defenses.

The veteran tight end may need to play a bigger role in the championship’s offense after top receiver Lachie Rice injured his knee in a collision with Mahomes during an interception return in the first quarter against the Chargers. The play started when Mahomes beat Kelce downfield and Christian Fulton made a successful interception.

Kelce, who turns 35 on Saturday, is looking to break two more Kansas City franchise records.

He has 74 touchdown receptions, second only to Gonzalez’s 77. Kelce’s 77 total touchdowns are seven behind Priest Holmes’ Chiefs record of 84.

Associated Press reported.
