The NIH Communities Advancing Research Equity for Health™ (CARE for Health™) program announced three inaugural locations for its primary care-focused clinical research network. These awards are part of a pilot project to test the feasibility of a research network that extends research opportunities into primary care settings. NIH envisions this approach to accelerate research advances toward implementation in routine medical care, improving health outcomes and health equity for all.
Each of the three research network hubs will serve rural areas and participate in existing NIH-funded clinical research. CARE for Health expands the reach of existing NIH-funded research by matching it with established local primary care research networks.
For example, the award to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) will work with BeatPain Utah, a collaborative NIH trial targeting back pain patients living in rural and low-income areas hit hardest by the opioid epidemic. BeatPain Utah will be available to recruit from the OHSU network of federally qualified health centers serving rural areas as one of the first three trials associated with CARE for Health.
