DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Dothan is receiving a multi-thousand dollar grant to add a new fitness feature to the city.
A few years ago, Dothan Leisure Services installed a national fitness court at one of its parks.
Now, the city has the opportunity to add another outdoor gym to encourage people to get involved in fitness.
The Dothan City Commission voted to accept a grant to fund the addition of fitness courts to James Oates Park.
The grant is from the National Fitness Campaign, something Dothan is no stranger to.
“We have had a partnership with the National Fitness Campaign since 2017. They are in constant contact with us. They continually provide us with new programs and new information, and this They contacted us about a grant opportunity,” said Tyson Carter, assistant director of operations for Dothan Leisure Services.
The $50,000 grant will go toward fitness courts nationwide, as well as the one at Westgate Park.
“We like to put these next to trails that are heavily used. Obviously, the Westgate Trail is heavily used and the courts there are very popular. identified James Oates Park as another site. It has active trails and a lot of trail users. This court would fit very well with the activities at that park.” spoke.
Court is an outdoor gym aimed at attracting people with a variety of fitness backgrounds.
“Fitness Court is specifically designed with everyone from the bare-bones beginner to the most advanced CrossFitter in mind. It can be done with the family or as part of a larger body reconstruction program. You can,” Carter said.
The court is located near the pavilion and playground.
It is scheduled to be completed by spring 2025.
