LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – To honor breast cancer survivors and spread awareness, CHI Health lights St. Elizabeth Hospital pink every October.
To kick off the month on Tuesday, the hospital also hosted a ladies’ night for breast cancer survivors and those affected by breast cancer.
The event featured presentations about breast cancer and what patients and survivors can do to stay healthy.
Dean Barnard, a skilled nurse at the hospital’s Women’s Health Center, said receiving a cancer diagnosis is often a frightening moment.
“It’s really hard, not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically,” Bernard said. “And that affects not only the patient but the family as well.”
But Bernard said bringing everyone together like this helps provide hope.
“I think coming to these events and being with people who have been in your shoes gives people a sense of belonging,” Bernard said. “It gives them peace of mind knowing that there is life after this diagnosis and that there is something to look forward to.”
The lights on the side of the hospital remain pink throughout October and are visible from 70th Street.
CHI Health will also be participating in the Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk on October 20th in Holmes Lake.
