The ACC released a statement regarding the controversial game that ended Friday night’s game between Virginia Tech and Miami.
With three seconds left in the game, VT QB Kyron Drones fired a 30-yard bomb to Daquan Felton, who delivered a miracle Hail Mary. However, after nearly 10 minutes of deliberation, the referees reversed the decision, giving Miami a 38-34 victory.
“We are in the process of considering the final play,” the statement said. “The loose ball was determined to have been touched by a Miami player while out of bounds, resulting in an incomplete pass and the play ended immediately.”
The ending of the classic game between Virginia Tech and Miami clearly had mixed reactions.
After the game, Miami QB Cam Ward didn’t hesitate to post on social media. In the win, Cam Ward completed 24 of 38 pass attempts for 348 passing yards and four touchdowns, and threw two interceptions. This is just the latest outstanding performance for the Heisman Trophy candidate.
Ward’s choice of emojis in his post mimics his famous touchdown celebration. After the senior QB finds the end zone, he covers his face with one hand while waving his other hand in front of him. The post comes as a blow to Virginia Tech fans who took issue with the controversial ending of the game.
Virginia Tech fans weren’t the only ones who disagreed with the referee’s call in Miami’s favor. ESPN analyst Andre Ware believed the decision should not have been overturned and sympathized with the Hokies faithful.
“There was a lot of conversation about that, because I don’t know where it’s going to show up on the replay to reverse the call on the field,” Ware said. “And if you say it’s incomplete, take it that way. I just thought this ruling should stand no matter what it’s called on the field. That’s tough. ”
