Delaware County Council President Dr. Monica Taylor attended the event along with other elected officials and community leaders.

Taylor said AFAHO is a “great partner” for the county.

“We’re able to open this here in Derby and understand the health care access issues that we have and expand that for our community and make it easier to access… It’s just a game changer for us,” she said.

AFAHO operations director Teo Kabangai said he was “thrilled” to see the team’s vision come to fruition.

“It was a vision and a mission,” he said. “Here we are. It’s fulfilling.” AFAHO, a nonprofit organization that serves immigrant communities and the uninsured and underinsured in Africa and the Caribbean, is based in Derby. A clinic was opened in. (Emily Neal/Why)

Tiguida Cava founded AFAHO in 2005 to serve the health care needs of African and Caribbean immigrant communities in Southwest Philadelphia and beyond. The organization has since expanded to include educational, social and language services, serving more than 2,000 people annually.

Mr. Cava attributed the opening of the clinic to Richards’ leadership and the hard work of AFAHO staff.

“We are there for the people,” she said.

To learn more about the clinic and its services, visit AFAHO’s website or stop by the clinic at 875 Main Street, Darby, Delaware County.
