The introduction of biometrics, involving agencies such as Thales, IDEMIA, VisionBox and the TSA, highlights the airline industry’s commitment to streamlining operations. Major airports in India, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States are integrating biometric and digital identification systems to optimize passenger flow and improve security, while SITA We opened new facilities to accommodate the market.
Thales and Adani airports in India
In India, Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) has partnered with Thales to introduce a suite of digital tools aimed at improving the air travel experience across its airports.
The partnership will introduce biometric-based passenger travel powered by facial recognition systems, eliminating bottlenecks in the check-in and boarding process. Thales cutting technology not only ensures faster and more convenient travel, but also strengthens security protocols through a robust digital identity verification system.
Seven airports managed by AAHL currently have DigiYatra powered by Thales’ Fly to Gate tool. The tool uses facial recognition technology to securely verify the identity of passengers and ensure responsible use of biometric data.
Thales will design and implement the end-to-end APOC system for all airports managed by AAHL. A cloud-based smart digital platform centralizes applications essential to airport management.
SITA expands global reach with new technology hub
In Romania, SITA is expanding its global technology capabilities with the establishment of a new hub in Cluj, Romania. The company said the plan is for the hub to enhance SITA’s ability to develop and deploy tools, including biometric and digital ID systems, for airports around the world. Like Thales, SITA aims to meet the growing demand for enhanced security and seamless travel experiences between international airports.
The Cluj-Napoca hub will join a network of SITA technology hubs in the UK, Ireland and India that will work independently on developing digital ID systems for passenger processing.
“As the aviation industry undergoes rapid digital transformation, our new technology hub in Cluj-Napoca will accelerate the development of technologies that meet the growing demands of passengers for faster, smarter and greener travel. ” said David Labourel, CEO of SITA.
“With a focus on automation, biometrics and AI, this hub will play a key role in modernizing passenger processing around the world, enabling more seamless and efficient travel solutions.”
TSA strengthens security at Montana airport with CAT-2
In the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is deploying identity verification technology at five airports in Montana. The system includes a Biometric Credentials Authentication Technology (CAT-2) machine and a mobile boarding pass that allows TSA officers to use real-time facial recognition and mobile boarding passes without requiring travelers to present physical ID. Biometric verification can be used to verify the passenger’s identity.
TSA currently accepts mobile IDs in 11 of 14 states (excluding Delaware, Mississippi, and Missouri) at select airports where travelers use Idemia I&S’ biometric CAT-2 system for identification. I accept it. Additionally, in partnership with IDEMIA, we are conducting a field test for West Virginia’s mobile driver’s license.
Interpol fugitive arrested using facial recognition at Bali airport
The effectiveness of biometric technology in improving security was highlighted at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, where facial recognition-based automatic gates provided by Vision-Box helped Interpol escape from China, Tempo.co reports. He said he flagged the person.
A biometric system designed to identify passengers at various touchpoints detected passengers attempting to pass through immigration. This incident shows that facial recognition technology has the potential to not only improve passenger convenience, but also serve as a tool for international crime prevention.
Bali’s success with biometric technology highlights Indonesia’s national ambitions to integrate similar systems at its busiest airports.
Vision-Box’s biometric authentication system has been installed at some of the busiest airports in the United States. The company has partnered with the Indonesian Directorate of Immigration and Sinergi Techno Global Perkasa to deploy more than 150 biometric touchpoints at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) and Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). .
Installation of biometric gates in Bali began in October 2023, and testing was conducted in February 2024.
