SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – We’ve talked about the mistakes Notre Dame’s special teams group has made in several past games, but in the win over Georgia Tech, the Fighting Irish made some of their best efforts with a lot of involvement. I showed you one of my performances. The number of plays I had to see twice.
Notre Dame’s special teams pulled off several tricks against Georgia Tech, including an accidental choke hold on a field goal attempt and a blocked kick by freshman Bryce Young.
They ran not one, but two trick plays from the punt formation, each yielding a first down and stealing multiple possessions from Georgia Tech.
“First of all, we usually present it to the head coach and see if he’s interested in what we want to do,” Irish special teams coordinator Marty Biagi said. “We’re being very careful in that regard, and I’m working backwards and considering what the worst-case scenario is and working in that direction. Naturally, we’ll consider You know you don’t want to put Notre Dame in a bad position when you make any kind of play in any kind of plan. ”
The standout moment was when Tyler Buchner grabbed a first down with his feet after making a perfect fake hold.
“I think this is an exciting and positive thing for the program,” Biagi said. “That was exciting because Tyler, like a lot of our players, is willing to do whatever he’s asked to do. A lot of our players, including the guy who faked a punt, said to me after the game, ‘Coach. , I can’t believe we played a game like that.” Whatever my role is to achieve a win, whether it’s Tyler or a player who looks up, it’s a great job with the chemistry that Coach (Marcus) Freeman has built. ”
The group’s performance has also improved and I’m looking forward to watching these plays unfold. The success will continue Saturday afternoon against Navy.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game, to be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is set for 12:00 p.m. ET. The game will be available to watch on ABC/ESPN+.
