JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Officials are reminding dog owners to make sure their pets are vaccinated against distemper virus.
More cases of canine distemper virus have been discovered in Jonesboro and Craighead counties, Jonesboro Animal Control said, adding that more cases are suspected of being transmitted in wild animals.
“This highly contagious disease is deadly but preventable through proper vaccination,” the news release said.
This increase comes more than two weeks after the JAC announced that officers picked up raccoons exhibiting symptoms of distemper virus.
Officials advise taking the necessary steps to limit your dog’s exposure to wild animals such as raccoons and foxes. If your dog has not been vaccinated against distemper virus, contact your veterinarian immediately.
JAC added that the city is planning another vaccination clinic specifically for distemper virus. There’s no word on when that will happen.
