Arizona State’s offense, which has averaged 17.3 points per game over the past three games, should wake up Saturday against Texas Tech. Texas Tech is last in the Big XII by allowing 34.4 points per game and 15th in total defense by allowing 463.0 yards per game. Arizona has had little success offensively.
Arizona ranks 13th in the ACC with 28.3 points per game and seventh with 417.5 yards per game. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan ranks in the top five in the Big XII in receptions and yards per game, but he’s inconsistent. Against New Mexico and Kansas State against McMillan, he had a combined 21 receptions for 242 yards and four touchdowns.
In Arizona’s other two games against Northern Arizona and Utah, McMillan totaled eight receptions for 61 yards. McMillan hasn’t had a TD reception since the season-opening 61-39 win over New Mexico. McMillan led the Lobos with 10 receptions for 304 yards and four TDs.
Arizona, which gained 627 total yards against New Mexico, has averaged 347.67 total yards per game in its last three games. Under the previous coaching staff, Arizona averaged 448.0 total yards per game in 2023, ranking 20th in the nation. Most of that was due to QB Fifita and McMillan, who had 90 receptions for 1,402 yards and 10 TDs in 2023.
Arizona ranks sixth in the Big XII in 2024 with an average of 265.0 passing yards per game. Texas Tech was last in the Big XII with 309.4 passing yards and 10 touchdowns per game. Opponents are completing 62.5% of their pass attempts against Texas Tech, which ranks 14th in the Big XII and 15th with a passer rating of 144.55.
Texas Tech has a good run defense, but not by much. The Red Raiders are the only team in the Big XII to allow double-digit rushing TDs 13 times. Texas Tech is allowing 153.60 rushing yards per game and 4.34 yards per carry. Arizona ranks 10th in the Big XII, averaging 152.50 rushing yards per game.
When Arizona actually commits to executing, they have succeeded. The Wildcats rank third in the Big XII, averaging 5.87 yards per carry. Conley also ranks fourth with four rushing TDs. Arizona could also get Conley more involved in the passing game as it continues to look for a receiver to complement McMillan. Conley has 11 receptions for 83 yards this season. For Utah, tight end Keian Barnett had five receptions for 85 yards and one TD.

Arizona should be able to make a splash against a Texas Tech defense that has allowed at least 37 points three times and over 400 yards three times this season. Arizona hasn’t reached any of those milestones in its last three games. Saturday is a time for Arizona to improve offensively.
