Goldsmiths, University of London, School of Arts invites applications for its world-leading arts research MPhil/PhD program for entry in September 2025.
We are conducting three recruitment rounds. To be considered for CHASE funding, applications must be submitted to the department by November 17, 2024. An additional round for applications from privately funded students is planned for spring 2025, date to be determined.
We also welcome applications from outstanding practitioners for two fully-funded CHASE Collaborative Doctoral Awards. One is ‘Drawing for Humans and Machines’ between art and computing at London’s Goldsmiths and Drawing Room public gallery. “Sound mediality/ancestral sociality” with Art and Goldsmiths Center for Postcolonial Studies and Avoca Mediateca Onshore in Marafo, Guinea-Bissau.

Our programs support fine art, curation, art writing, and innovative art research in a variety of disciplines at the highest levels of ambitious thought and rigorous experimentation. We welcome research proposals in all areas of fine arts, curation, and art writing. To best support your project, we prioritize research proposals in areas of interest to Faculty of Arts faculty. We also support cross-departmental supervision, allowing you to take advantage of the wide range of outstanding research expertise and supervisory experience that Goldsmiths offers across disciplines.
The research degree in this program has two interrelated components. One is a research activity carried out individually with the support of a supervisory team, and the other is a program of installations, workshops and seminars that brings about a dynamic dialogue with other research students and the wider community within the company. In addition to this, the research degree is further supported by courses and professional development provided by the Graduate School, which coordinates postgraduate research across the university.

When it comes to production, the Fine Arts Department has 11 specialist art practice areas that complement traditional disciplines, from metalworking, foundry and woodworking to ceramics, textiles, printing, photography, 3D printing, graphics and video. We offer expert support for a variety of scalable processes. Editing, animation and 3D modeling. Studio space is available to full-time students and reservable space is available to all MPhil/PhD students, subject to availability. It will be possible to regularly exhibit practice-based works through an installation program that allows for public participation in research projects.
The program and the Faculty as a whole host a Center for Arts and Ecology, are developing a Choreography Research Unit, and support a wide range of research clusters, including Feminist Duration and Animation Assembly. The program supports the Generation Delta Project, which improves access to postgraduate study and careers for BAME women.
